Poya day - Full moon

Poya day - Full moon

Explored# 367 : )

Yesterday was Poya day, a national holiday here in Sri Lanka. Poya day for the rest of us is the day when it’s a full moon and in Buddhism this is closely linked to a lot of important events. Buddha was born on a full moon, he achieved enlightenment on a full moon, he preached to the 5 ascetics on a full moon etc. Basically all important events in Buddhism took place on a full moon.

On Poya day most Buddhist live as Vegetarians and also follow the same rules as the monks & nuns. It’s also a time for meditation since it’s said to enhance the experience. I’ve actually read about scientific reports that support this and there is difference down here on earth from the full moon. Be it the gravity, light or some other phenomenon I don’t know but I do know that I myself have a quieter and calmer time when I meditate on Poya.

What’s so wonderful about it is that the beaches get absolutely filled with people who come down to visit the ocean. All the colorful saris flying in the wind and smell of chilly in the air, I love walking around this time. Later that night, it was a nice and chilly 27c and I went out with my tripod to see if I could “catch the moon”.
