Nothing special for yesterday… Sorry to disappoint. But these are the realities of a 365 project, some days are extra special and some days are just plain ordinary Thanks Jessica for being a good model haha.
Wow. What can I say? It is hard to believe that a year has gone by since I started this 365 project but here I am, finished with it (albeit having cheated a little and being a few days over). When I first started this project, I was just starting to get into photography. It’s almost kind of funny looking back at my pictures at the beginning and comparing it to the pictures now. I knew very little of photography when I first picked up my DSLR way back in December of 2009, but I quickly became aware of how addicting this hobby could become. About 1 year, countless lens rotations, and 3 camera bodies later, I end up here, at the end of the 365. While the compositions changed only slightly, the post processing varied throughout the entire year. I guess that is the thing with this project – because it is over a year’s time, you are really forced to find your own style. Maybe you don’t expect to originally, but unconsciously, the variety in your perspectives grow into your own unique view.
A lot has happened over the past year – a lot of ups and downs. But one of the things that got me by those mountains and valleys was the fact that I could document it through my camera. It was also a pleasure to share it all with you. I didn’t think much of flickr to begin with. Originally, it was simply a photo storage site but gradually this became one of very best social networking sites I have ever used. Through flickr I was able to get some fantastic travel tips from locals in New York, Madrid, Ireland, and Scotland. And on top of meeting photog’s in Vancouver, I was also able to meet the coolest dog (Suki) in San Fran (whilst having some of the world’s best coffee with a couple of contacts there), I exchange post cards and gifts with people in Hawaii, Melbourne, and San Jose, and I still have regular drinks with contacts in London. This project has been much more than just an experience in photography – it has been so great because I have had the pleasure to meet so many of you.
Even though the 365 has been difficult to keep up with and it almost felt like a chore at times, it was a worthwhile project. I don’t have any real favourites from my 365 project and while some shots came back as rubbish, there were some that I was proud of taking. That’s the thing with photography, you can have days where you struggle to shoot anything worthwhile but then it would take just one shot to remind you why you love it. When I get back home, I plan on creating a website that sells prints and albums for some of my past and present photos. That will really test my flash and html knowledge that I’ve lost since I stopped trying at the age of 16 haha… The thought of doing this for commercial purposes has crossed my mind. Getty approached me months ago and I was able to be featured in an online magazine. But at the same time, I think I currently prefer to have the pressure off so that I can do this leisurely. Maybe when I get back to Vancouver, I will consider doing this as part of a job but for now, I think just travelling and shooting Europe is what I want to do – for fun
So with that being said, I want to thank all of you – for all the visits, the comment’s, the fav’s and most of all, for being the HUGE inspiration that has kept me going. Your photos have had such a huge influence and impact on what my style is today – it continues to be that way even though this project has ended. The pictures you take are astounding and there isn’t a day that goes by where I am not shocked that this picture is not in some form of a magazine or publication. There is still a lot to learn but I am glad that I went through this project. This is not good bye but I won’t be doing another 365 haha. I’ll definitely be in and out frequently though. As I travel throughout Europe, I will continue posting pictures from my travels as well. See you guys… probably tomorrow! Haha.
